Temporary Grades: TZ, NG and blank grades are not factored into the GPA for the purpose of academic standing. However, grades of TB+, TB, TC+, TC, TD, TF are computed respectively as B+, B, C+, C, D, F and students with more than one TZ, NG or blank grade may be subject to registration restrictions. Regardless of the assignment of any temporary grade, if the term average is below 2.00 a student will remain on the appropriate academic sanction until such time as the grade is officially changed and sufficiently improves the term average to a 2.00 or higher.
If you are not a readmitted student, you may remain on Academic Probation as long as your cumulative GPA does not fall below the required standard for academic progress. If the cumulative GPA does deteriorate to this point you may be subject to Suspension or Dismissal.
Students who have completed 90 or more credits may take up to two courses (8 credits maximum, one course per semester) on a Pass/No Credit basis. Applications open the week of add/drop each semester. Click here for further information about the Senior Pass/No Credit Request. Submission Deadline:
The W is one of the most misunderstood registration adjustments at Rutgers. A W is neither a grade nor punitive. It is a Registrar’s notation indicating that you made a reasoned decision to adjust your registration after the Add/Drop period. It is an adjustment permitted by the University and does not suggest anything to future employers or graduate schools. A W does not calculate into your term or cumulative GPA.
Each semester, many students make the decision to withdraw from a class in order to focus on courses that are more important to their academic plans, to reduce a too-heavy credit load, to respond to sudden family or health issues, to comply with credit restrictions connected to their Academic Standing, or to remove a class in which success is remote. If you are in doubt about whether to withdraw, talk with an SAS Advisor by scheduling a advising appointment.
When might you consider avoiding the W? If you receive Financial Aid, too many notations of W may make you ineligible to receive future aid if your completion rate drops below Standards of Academic Progress. In addition, if you withdraw frequently or find yourself withdrawing from the same course more than once, this suggests poor academic planning or a faulty assessment of your own academic abilities. If you are following an Academic Plan for Financial Aid now, talk to your Academic Advisor before withdrawing or dropping. If you are not following an Academic Plan but have concerns, talk to an SAS Advisor by scheduling an appointment.
No. Approved courses taken at institutions outside Rutgers transfer as credits only. The grades do not become part of your Rutgers GPA. Taking a course at a county college or another institution will not raise your Rutgers GPA.
You need to earn at least a grade of "C".
A Rutgers University transcript records all courses taken at Rutgers University and the outcome (grade or withdrawal). You may not repeat, for degree credit, courses bearing the same or equivalent course numbers, with the exception of courses designated as repeatable for credit. Please be sure to monitor your transcript and earned credits. Please see following link for more information.
Multiply the numerical value of each course grade by the number of credits for that course. Add those grade points, then divide by the total credits included in the GPA calculation.
Your term GPA uses the courses included for that semester. Your cumulative GPA uses all coursework included in the cumulative calculation. Some grades and course prefixes are excluded.

The E and J prefixes and grades of P and NC are excluded from GPA calculations. Their degree credit treatment differs, as shown below. A K prefix is included for comparison because its grade does count in the GPA.
Temporary grades have separate rules for GPA and academic standing. Review the FAQ “Do temporary grades count towards my term GPA?” for those rules.

Start by discussing the grade with your instructor. If the issue is unresolved, write to the Undergraduate Director of the department or program offering the course and provide the basis for your concern and supporting information.
For work graded during a course, raise the concern promptly and submit a written complaint within two weeks of notification of the grade. A written complaint about a final course grade must be submitted no later than four weeks after the end of the semester’s exam period.
For Rutgers-New Brunswick SAS courses beginning with 01, students who complete the department review process and still wish to appeal may submit an appeal to the SAS Office of Undergraduate Education. Review the SAS Grade Appeals Process. For courses offered by another school or campus, contact that school or campus. Some departments have specific appeal procedures.
Contact the course instructor promptly if you believe a posted grade is incorrect or if you need to resolve a temporary grade. Grade changes must be handled through the instructor.
Under normal circumstances, an original grade cannot be changed after the end of the next full semester or after the student has graduated. Limited exceptions may be considered in special circumstances with the faculty member’s consent.
A grade of Pass (PA) earns degree credit but is not included in your GPA. A grade of No Credit (NC) earns no degree credit and is also excluded from your GPA.
SAS students who have completed at least 90 credits may be eligible to take certain free elective courses on a Pass/No Credit basis. This option cannot be used for courses needed to satisfy a major, minor, SAS Core requirement, or another graduation credential. Additional restrictions and application deadlines apply.
Review the Pass/No Credit policy and the FAQ “How do I submit a Senior Pass/No Credit Request for one of my courses?” before submitting a request.
Academic Amnesty may be available to eligible students returning to SAS after at least five consecutive years away from Rutgers with a cumulative GPA below 2.00. Meet with an academic advisor to verify eligibility before reenrolling.
Before Amnesty can be awarded, eligible students must complete 12 new Rutgers degree credits with a GPA of at least 2.75 within one academic year of reenrollment.
If approved, prior grades are excluded from the cumulative GPA, which is then based on coursework completed after reenrollment. Prior D and F grades cannot be used to satisfy degree requirements. Prior grades of C or better may still fulfill degree requirements. Additional conditions and restrictions apply.
